Ground Fault Interrupters

Ground fault interrupter is an interesting safety device that protects people against electric shock when they touch appliances and power tools. Its operation makes use of Faraday’s law.

When the return current is not the same as the supply  current, a fault occurs at the appliance or power tool. Some current is allowed to flow out of the device. The difference in current will induce a flux in the sensing coil which will in turn cause a current to flow to the circuit breaker. The circuit breaker will then break the electrical connection to prevent any accidents.
