IPhO Experimental Skills

IPhO experiment hub: uncertainty, error propagation, graphing and fitting, and writing clear conclusions under exam conditions.

  • International Physics Olympiad preparation
  • 6 lessons

Before you begin

IPhO experiment marks are often lost on presentation and uncertainty, not on physics knowledge. These lessons build the routines that turn messy data into clean, defensible answers.

Be comfortable with: the O-Level practical skills, A-Level practical Q&A, accuracy, precision and measurement errors and the IPhO problem-solving framework.

Learning goals
  • Apply experimental skills models and problem-solving methods in competition settings.

Lessons

Work through them in order.

Build the bridge

  1. Uncertainty & Error Propagation (IPhO)Propagate absolute and percentage uncertainties through a calculation and state a clear result.

Build the official core

  1. Data Fitting & Linearisation (IPhO)Linearise a relationship and read physical parameters from the gradient and intercept of a fit.
  2. Plotting, Error Bars & Significant Figures (IPhO Experimental)Draw exam-quality graphs with sensible scales, error bars and best-fit lines, and round results correctly.
  3. Writing the Experimental Solution (IPhO Experimental)Present diagrams, tables, graphs, calculations and conclusions that earn marks under time pressure.

Transfer to unfamiliar problems

  1. Systematic Errors, Calibration & Controls (IPhO Experimental)Identify systematic bias and remove it with calibration, reversals and controls.
  2. Experiment Design & Estimation (IPhO Experimental)Plan an experiment by choosing ranges and controls so the unknown parameter becomes a gradient.

What you should be able to do

  • Propagate measurement uncertainty and report values with precision justified by the data.
  • Choose a graph or linearisation that makes the target parameter and its uncertainty interpretable.
  • Design, calibrate and evaluate a method by identifying dominant random and systematic limitations.

Official scope: Stages skills drawn from the official experimental requirements and should be trained throughout the theory programme, not left to the end.

Training habits

  • When you draw a graph, write one sentence: “slope equals ___, therefore ___”.
  • Always state at least one major source of systematic error and the direction of its effect.
