What you need to understand
Separate cause from support: inheritance explains origin; technology supports function.
Definitions
- hereditary
- passed from parents through inherited informationFor example: A hereditary condition is not contagious.
Explanation
Inherited conditions are passed through genetic information, rather than caught through contact. Sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and colour deficiency are prescribed examples. Family information alone does not establish an individual diagnosis or show that every child must have a condition; the inheritance details are beyond this lesson.
Dialysis removes wastes and excess water when kidneys cannot do so adequately. It replaces only some kidney functions and requires repeated treatment. A transplant places a donor kidney that may restore much function, but requires a suitable donor, surgery and ongoing care, with a risk of rejection. Neither is a guaranteed one-time cure.
Pause and say it: Separate cause from support: inheritance explains origin; technology supports function.
Common mistake
Tempting wrong idea: Medical treatment creates the inheritance of a hereditary condition.
Why it fails: A hereditary condition is not contagious, and kidney-support technology does not change which genetic information a person inherited.
Use this instead: Hereditary conditions pass through inherited information. Completing an antibiotic prescription does not create that inheritance.
Worked Examples
Challenge 1
Compare two forms of kidney support
Problem
A student says, “A kidney transplant and dialysis are both complete, one-time cures for kidney failure.” Correct the claim by explaining one benefit and one limitation of each technology.
Give a balanced comparison
Hints
Hint 1: dialysis
Does the treatment replace all kidney function permanently, or must it be repeated?
Hint 2: transplant
Could the immune system respond to tissue from another person?
View solution step by step
Balance benefits and limitations
Method
Describe what each option can do without calling either a guaranteed cure.
Reason
Medical technologies can restore or support function but still have practical and biological limits.
Working
Dialysis removes wastes and excess water from the blood when kidneys cannot do so adequately, but it requires repeated treatment and may become a lifelong dependence. A successful kidney transplant can restore much kidney function for longer periods, but a suitable donor is needed and the recipient’s immune system may reject the organ.
Guided practice
Try it with support
Explain why sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and colour deficiency are called hereditary rather than contagious.
- Distinguish inheritance from spread of microbes.
Check the guided answer
Answer: They can pass through inherited genetic information; they are not caught through ordinary contact.
Check: This classification does not diagnose an individual or mean every child in a family must have the condition.
Practise and continue
Practise this
A fictional information card calls dialysis and transplantation the same one-time cure. Compare one benefit and one limitation of each.
Need a hint?
- Keep purpose and limitation paired for each technology.
Check your answer
Answer: Dialysis removes wastes and excess water but requires repeated treatment and replaces only some functions. A transplant can restore much function but needs a donor, surgery and ongoing care, with rejection risk.
Check: Do not choose a treatment for a person from this classroom comparison.
Think like a scientist
A fictional claim says a kidney transplant prevents children from inheriting colour deficiency. Find the first error.
Check the reasoning
A transplant supports organ function; it does not change the genetic information a person inherited or the rules of inheritance.
Remember: Inherited does not mean infectious, and transplantation is not vaccination.
One-minute check
- Hide the page and explain heredity and medical technology in your own words.
- Give a new example that is different from the worked example.
- Correct this common mistake: “Medical treatment creates the inheritance of a hereditary condition.”
