Learning objectives
- Assess random, systematic and propagated uncertainties.
- Select and justify measuring instruments by range and precision
Caliper 1 with nothing between the jaws. Close the jaws to see its zero error.
- Zero error
- Close the jaws fully.
- Corrected reading
- Close the jaws onto the object.
Try this
0 of 3 doneClose the empty jaws and find this caliper's zero error, with its sign. (not done yet)
Vernier zero to the right of the main scale zero gives a positive zero error; to the left, a negative one.
Put the object in, measure it and enter the corrected reading. (not done yet)
Corrected reading = reading shown − zero error. A negative zero error makes the corrected reading larger.
Do both for a caliper with a negative zero error. (not done yet)
For a negative zero error, count the aligned line from the right-hand end of the vernier.
