Learning objectives

  • Identify and analyse simple harmonic motion using its defining equation and sinusoidal solutions.
  • Relate displacement, velocity, acceleration and phase in simple harmonic motion.
  • Describe kinetic–potential energy interchange in ideal simple harmonic motion.

1. Definitions (Must Know)

A. Simple harmonic motion (defining equation)

Simple harmonic motion (SHM) is motion where acceleration is proportional to displacement and always directed towards equilibrium: a = -ω² x

B. Key symbols

  • displacement from equilibrium: x (m)
  • amplitude: x₀ (m)
  • angular frequency: ω (rad s⁻¹)

2. Key Ideas (What Earns Marks)

  • The defining test for SHM is a = -ω²x (acceleration opposite to displacement).
  • One solution form you must recognise/use: x = x₀ sin(ω t)
  • Velocity and acceleration relationships: v = v₀ cos(ω t), v₀ = ω x₀ and v = ±ω square root of (x₀²-x²)
  • Key checkpoints:
    • at equilibrium (x = 0): |v| is maximum, a = 0
    • at extremes (x = ± x₀): v = 0, |a| is maximum
  • Energy in SHM swaps between kinetic and potential; total mechanical energy is constant if there is no damping.

Exam pitfall: missing the restoring sign

SHM requires acceleration toward equilibrium: a = -ω²x. If your equation gives acceleration in the same direction as displacement, it is not SHM.

3. Detailed Explanations

A. Why the minus sign matters

If x > 0 (to the right of equilibrium), then a = -ω²x < 0, so acceleration points left, back toward equilibrium.

If x < 0, then a > 0, again pointing back toward equilibrium.

That “always back towards equilibrium” property is what makes the motion oscillatory.

B. Acceleration–displacement graph

The defining equation predicts a straight-line graph through the origin with negative gradient.

Acceleration–displacement graph (SHM)

In simple harmonic motion, acceleration is proportional to −displacement, giving a straight line through the origin with negative gradient.

C. Velocity relationships (what you use in questions)

For SHM, velocity is maximum at equilibrium and zero at the extremes.

You are expected to recognise/use the no-time form: v = ±ω square root of (x₀²-x²)

D. Energy in SHM (as a function of displacement)

For an ideal SHM system (no damping), total mechanical energy stays constant while kinetic and potential energy swap.

For a particle of mass m with restoring force F = -mω²x, choose potential energy zero at equilibrium. Then:

U = (1/2)mω²x²

K = (1/2)mω²(x₀²-x²)

Eₜₒₜₐₗ = K + U = (1/2)mω²x₀²

These results assume ideal, undamped SHM. With damping, mechanical energy and amplitude decrease with time.

4. Common Mistakes

  • Writing a = ω²x (missing the minus sign; this changes the physics).
  • Saying “acceleration is zero at the extremes” (it is maximum in magnitude there).
  • Using SUVAT equations for SHM (acceleration is not constant).
  • Mixing up f and ω (use ω = 2π f).
  • Using the constant-energy equations for a damped oscillator without accounting for energy transfer.

5. Exam Tips

  • If you are asked “show it is SHM”, you aim to show a = -ω²x.
  • Use equilibrium/extreme checkpoints to sanity-check graphs and answers.
  • If the question provides x = x₀ sin(ω t), read off x₀ and ω directly.

6. Worked Examples

Modelled example 1

Identify SHM from an equation

Core

Problem

An oscillator has acceleration a = -25x in SI units. Show that the motion is SHM and find its angular frequency.
Study the worked solution
  1. Test the defining relation

    Method

    Acceleration is proportional to displacement and has the opposite sign.

    Reason

    The negative sign makes acceleration point towards equilibrium on either side.

    Working

    a = -25x has the form a = -ω²x.
  2. Identify angular frequency

    Method

    Set ω² = 25 and take the positive root.

    Reason

    Angular frequency is a non-negative magnitude.

    Working

    ω = square root of 25 = 5.0 rad s⁻¹

Guided practice 2

Maximum speed

About 4 min

Problem

A mass in SHM has amplitude 0.040 m and angular frequency 10π rad s⁻¹. Find its maximum speed and state where this occurs.

Try this before viewing the solution

Unit: m s⁻¹

Hints

Hint 1: use amplitude and angular frequency
At x = 0, vₘₐₓ = ω x₀.
View solution step by step
  1. Use the maximum-speed relation

    Method

    Use vₘₐₓ = ω x₀.

    Reason

    All ideal SHM energy is kinetic at equilibrium.

    Working

    vₘₐₓ = ω x₀
  2. Evaluate and locate

    Method

    Obtain 1.26 m s⁻¹ at x = 0.

    Reason

    Speed falls to zero at either extreme.

    Working

    vₘₐₓ = (10π)(0.040) = 1.26 m s⁻¹

Common misconception 3

Speed at a given displacement

Find and correct the mistake

Learner claim

For the same oscillator, at x = 0.030 m a learner uses v = ω(x₀-x). Diagnose the relation and find the speed.

Try this before viewing the solution

Unit: m s⁻¹

View solution step by step
  1. Repair the relation

    Method

    Use |v| = ω square root of (x₀²-x²).

    Reason

    The relation follows from sinusoidal motion or conservation of SHM energy; displacement is squared.

    Working

    |v| = ω square root of (x₀²-x²)
  2. Evaluate

    Method

    Obtain 0.83 m s⁻¹.

    Reason

    The question asks for speed, so no direction sign is required.

    Working

    |v| = (10π) square root of (0.040²-0.030²) ≈ 0.83 m s⁻¹

Examiner practice 4

Period and frequency from ω

2 marks

Examination question

An oscillator executes SHM with angular frequency 12 rad s⁻¹. Find its period and frequency. [2 marks]

Try this before viewing the solution

View solution step by step
  1. Find the period

    1 mark

    Method

    Obtain T = 0.524 s.

    Reason

    A full phase cycle is 2π radians.

    Working

    T = 2π/ω = 2π/12 = 0.524 s
  2. Find the frequency

    1 mark

    Method

    Obtain f = 1.91 Hz.

    Reason

    Frequency is reciprocal period, equivalently ω/(2π).

    Working

    f = 12/2π = 1.91 Hz

Challenge 5

Acceleration at a given displacement

Minimal support

Independent transfer

A mass moves in SHM with ω = 8.0 rad s⁻¹. At displacement x = +0.060 m, find the acceleration magnitude and direction, then state the acceleration at x = -0.060 m.

Try this before viewing the solution

Hints

Hint 1: use the restoring sign
Apply a = -ω²x separately at each displacement.
View solution step by step
  1. Evaluate at positive displacement

    Method

    a = -3.84 m s⁻², so magnitude is 3.84 m s⁻² towards equilibrium.

    Reason

    The restoring acceleration opposes positive displacement.

    Working

    a = -(8.0)²(0.060) = -3.84 m s⁻²
  2. Reverse the displacement

    Method

    At x = -0.060 m, a = +3.84 m s⁻².

    Reason

    Acceleration again points towards equilibrium, now in the positive direction.

    Working

    a = -(8.0)²(-0.060) = +3.84 m s⁻²

7. Mind Stretchers

Mind stretcher 1: Energy checkpointsExtension

In ideal SHM, when is kinetic energy maximum and when is potential energy maximum?

Show Answer

Kinetic energy is maximum at equilibrium (x = 0) where speed is maximum.

Potential energy is maximum at the extremes (x = ± x₀) where speed is zero.

Mind stretcher 2: “Proportional to” vs “equal to” (definition precision)Extension

The definition says “acceleration is proportional to displacement and directed towards equilibrium”.

Explain what “proportional to” means here, and identify the proportionality constant for SHM.

Show Answer

“Proportional to” means a is a constant multiple of x: a ∝ -x ⇒ a = -kx for some constant k.

For SHM, comparing with a = -ω²x, the proportionality constant is ω².
